On this edition of Century of Lies: Healthcare in Jails and Prisons.

The United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice recently held its Thirty-Fourth session in Vienna, Austria. This week on Century of Lies we’ll hear portions of a side event held during CCPCJ34, entitled Good Governance for Prison Health. This event highlighted why healthcare in jails and prisons should be integrated into national public health systems rather than managed under law enforcement agencies and justice ministries. Drawing on international standards and real-world examples, speakers discussed the benefits, challenges and lessons learned from countries that have undergone this transition.

On this edition of Century we hear presentations from Doctor Justice Tettey, Chief of the Drugs, Laboratory and Scientific Services Branch at UNODC; Anna Koshikova, Executive Director at the Eurasian Movement for the Right to Health in Prisons; Ajeng Larasati, Human Rights Lead at Harm Reduction International; and Jerome Mangelinckx, Global Policy Manager at Penal Reform International.
