Why Legacy Giving Matters

Preserving Independent Media

KBOO Community Radio has a rich history of providing a platform for voices often overlooked by mainstream media. By including KBOO in your estate plans, you help ensure that this vital resource continues to exist for future generations, promoting diversity and inclusivity in the media landscape.

Long-Term Sustainability

Legacy gifts play a crucial role in securing the financial future of KBOO. Your commitment allows us to invest in cutting-edge technology, maintain our broadcasting infrastructure, and adapt to the ever-evolving media landscape. By leaving a legacy, you become a guardian of independent journalism and creative expression.

Ways to Leave a Legacy

Bequests

A "bequest" refers to the act of leaving personal property or assets through a will or testament, typically to designated individuals or entities after the testator's death. This legal arrangement allows for the orderly distribution of one's belongings, financial resources, or specific items according to the specified wishes outlined in the will.

Including KBOO Community Radio in your will is a simple yet powerful way to make a lasting impact. You can leave a specific amount, a percentage of your estate, or even assets such as stocks or real estate. Consult with your attorney to ensure your wishes are accurately reflected in your will.

Types of Bequests

  • Cash Bequest: A straightforward gift of a specific amount of money.
  • Percentage Bequest: A donation expressed as a percentage of the estate's total value.
  • Residual Bequest: Designates a nonprofit to receive the remainder of the estate after other specific bequests and expenses are fulfilled.
  • Specific Bequest: Directs a particular asset, such as real estate, stocks, or artwork, to the nonprofit.
  • Contingent Bequest: The nonprofit receives the gift only under certain conditions, such as if other beneficiaries predecease the donor.
  • Restricted Bequest: Specifies how the funds should be used, such as for a particular program or project.
  • Endowment Bequest: Establishes a long-term fund, with only the investment income used by the nonprofit.
  • Real Estate Bequest: Donating property or land to the nonprofit organization.
  • Charitable Remainder Trust: A trust that provides income to the donor or a beneficiary for a specified period, with the remaining assets going to the nonprofit.

Life Insurance Policies

Designating KBOO as a beneficiary of your life insurance policy allows you to make a substantial contribution with relatively low out-of-pocket costs. By updating your beneficiary designation, you can leave a legacy that supports independent media while maintaining flexibility throughout your lifetime.

Retirement Accounts

Consider naming KBOO as a beneficiary of your retirement accounts, such as IRAs or 401(k)s. This option may offer tax benefits while contributing to the sustainability of community-driven radio.
