The Story of Stuff: a conversation with Annie Leonard

Annie Leonard is the author of The Story of Stuff (the book) and the animated video, and she runs  the on-line Story of Stuff Project.  Here she talks with the Old Mole's Jan Haaken about our surplus stuff and how we could make what we really need with less waste and destruction.

I'd like to underscore the the sobering distinction Annie makes between being a responsible adult and engaging in political activity to change the world. Many are ready to capitalize on a well-honed, intoxicating conflation between ecologically-responible living and political intervention in our sick-sad world. The thing is, it's a given that we should be living in the most ecologically sustainable ways possible. Buying recycled toilet paper IS NOT a special act of heroism, though we may think so if we equate how much money we spend, especially if we have relatively little, with a sense of sacrifice - "nothing's too expensive for Mother Earth!" . While there's nothing wrong with feeling good about doing the right thing, there is a point at which we give ourselves too much credit for doing what is morally imperative as it is - like a man who parades the fact that he does not beat his wife anymore as a feminist merit-badge.
