Bestselling author Michael Pollan discusses psychedelic therapy

Bestselling author Michael Pollan talks with KBOO reporter Doug McVay about psychedelic therapy, psilocybin mushrooms, and Pollan's book How To Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence.

Citizens of Denver, Colorado, recently voted on whether police should make enforcing the law against possession of psilocybin mushrooms a low enforcement priority for law enforcement. That measure, which also forbids police and prosecutors from spending funds to enforce, passed by a very narrow margin. Though technically no laws have changed, passage of the initiative sent shockwaves throughout the country.

Closer to home, an effort is underway in the state of Oregon to more broadly decriminalize psilocybin and to allow for psychedelic therapy using psilocybin mushrooms under the guidance of a qualified medical practitioner. Researchers have been looking at psilocybin for years and have found that it has great value in treating depression, anxiety, and a number of other conditions. Are Oregonians ready for psychedelic therapy?
