Please join us Tuesday January 1st for Transpositive PDX on KBOO Community radio.  We invite you to join hosts Jean Bryant, Nicolette Sandra James, Aiden Vargas and Emma Lugo as we ring in the New Year.  Call in and share your stories of the past year or your hopes for the New Year live at 503-231-8187.

Last year was a challenging year for the Transgender community filled with lots of ups and downs.  On the plus side we saw continued expansion of programs such at OHSU which has helped more than 700 people gain access to surgery since the program opened just three years ago. We have continued to see a vital and active Trans and Non Binary community with the 4th annual Trans Pride march as well as a full years worth of programming, organizing, events and meetings happening and at Portland’s many centers of organizing and community building such as the Q Center, Basic Rights Oregon, NW Pride and all the many organizations that serve or are served by the Trans Community.

On the other side of the fence we saw another almost 30 people murdered and countless hundreds who committed suicide or gave into despair in 2018.  In many ways 2018 was one of the darkest years in recent history in the Trans Community facing the continued assault on our rights by the Trump administration which spent yet another year working to exclude Transgender people from the US Military.  In addition to the attempt ban on Transgender people serving in the US military, Transgender kids are facing discrimination in the schools by the reversal of Executive directives guiding school policy to discriminate against Trans students in use of facilities such as bathrooms and changing rooms as well as  a general culture of hostility towards Trans kids being fostered by the executive branch of government which expressed itself most fully in the 2018 Presidential Memo directing the DHHS to erase Transgender identities from public space by creating new draconian rules defining gender according to heterodoxy in the face of all currently established science on the matter of gender identity.  We have yet to see how this will play out in 2019 but we will be there with Transpositive and with KBOO community radio following developments and supporting the resistance to fascism and celebrating our unique contributions to the community.

Transpositive is a monthly program in Portland exploring themes important to those who identify as Transgender, Gender Non Binary and Gender Non-Conforming. Transpositive tries to connect listeners with the ongoing activist, arts, culture, and dialogue happening in Portland and beyond. Transpositive plays on the first Tuesday of every month on KBOO radio in Portland, Oregon.
