Radiozine: PSU Panel on Free Speech and Education
Airs Thursday, November 20 at 10 a.m. on KBOO 90.7 FM

KBOO Community Radio will air a special episode of Radiozine featuring the recent PSU Panel on Free Speech and Education, recorded at Portland State University. The broadcast will take place Thursday, November 20 at 10:00 a.m.

This important conversation examines the ongoing decline of academic free speech in U.S. education. Panelists discuss their own experiences within institutions where political, legal, and financial pressures have increasingly limited open dialogue. Topics include the erosion of academic freedom, the rise of anticipatory obedience in institutional speech policies, and the impact of silencing on educators, students, and democratic culture.

The panel was organized by Reza Antoszewska and Jessica Rodriguez-JenKins, and features:

  • Joel Beinin – Professor Emeritus of Middle East History, Stanford University

  • Tammy Carpenter – Beaverton School District Board Member, physician, and community leader

  • Marlene Eid – Psychology faculty, Portland Community College; Palestinian human rights advocate

  • Suzanna Kassouf – Social studies educator, author, and climate justice organizer

  • Jennifer Ruth – PSU Film professor and nationally recognized scholar on academic freedom

The discussion is moderated by Emma Lugo, longtime activist and former KBOO board president.

The event is co-sponsored by PSU-AAUP, PSUFA, SEIU Local 503, Portland Area Jews of Conscience, Rethinking Schools, the Jewish Palestinian Alliance of Oregon, and DSA.
