War is not green, and sailing for an end to genocide: Frann Michel hosts this episode featuring these segments:
Aaron Kirshenbaum and Laurie Mercier discuss CodePink’s “War is Not Green” campaign, which is seeking to pressure mainstream environmental organizations to acknowledge the US war economy’s role in ecocide and genocide. Kirshenbaum’s work focuses on climate justice and cross-movement solidarity, Palestinian solidarity, tenant rights, and abolitionist organizing. Their research on militarism and climate change has been published in outlets like Common Dreams, CounterPunch, and Hampton Institute, offering critical insights into the environmental and humanitarian impacts of global militarization. Aaron also mentions the CodePink co-sponsored documentary Earth’s Greatest Enemy, a film project by Abby Martin that challenges audiences to rethink the hidden costs of a global military empire and its planetary consequences. The film returns to Portland November 30 from 12:30pm-4 at the Clinton St Theatre, 2522 SE Clinton St, Portland, OR 97202, featuring a Q&A with Abby Martin and co-director Mike Prysner following the screening. Since 2007, Israel has blockaded the movement of goods and people in and out of the Gaza Strip, and since 2008, activists have sought to break the illegal blockade by sailing through the blockade zone to deliver humanitarian aid by sea. Since 2010, repeated attempts by the Gaza Freedom Flotilla have been intercepted, raided, or attacked by Israeli forces. In the summer of 2025, participants from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition joined the Global Movement to Gaza and the Sumud Convoy, and launched the largest in the continuing series of flotillas, with 40 vessels and almost 500 participants from more than 44 countries. Among the participants from Portland was Paul Reid, who talks here with Frann Michel about why he joined the flotilla and what he experienced, including international solidarity, Israeli captivity, and US government complicity. He recommends concerned listeners visit and follow Americans United for Palestinian Human Rights: https://auphr.org/
