Our guest is Portland author Carolyn Dasher, discussing her debut novel, American Sky.
Set against the backdrop of three American wars—World War I, World War II, and Vietnam—the novel follows three generations of maverick women who dare to soar beyond the social confines of their time, though not without casualties.
American Sky illuminates the largely unknown history of the WASP program—Women Airforce Service Pilots who served in non-combat roles in WWII—and explores the rich emotional terrain of mother-daughter relationships, enduring female friendships, and intergenerational family secrets that must come to light.
Host Leigh Anne Kranz first met Carolyn Dasher in 2007 at a writers retreat on the Oregon Coast, hosted by Pacific Northwest author Jennie Shortridge. "I vividly remember reading Carolyn’s beautifully crafted prose for the first time, thinking, She's already great. I saw so clearly that one day I’d be reading her published novel—and that day has come".
