Psychologist turned filmmaker Jan Haaken talks about her forays into endangered habitats, war zones, and hospitals for the criminally insane

 

Jan Haaken is a clinical psychologist who also happens to be an author and documentary filmmaker.  Her films include Guilty Except for Insanity, a look behind the walls of a hospital for the criminally insane; Mind Zone, a portrait of therapists with the 113th Army Combat Stress detachment, and Necessity, a study of climate resisters as they grapple with community building, direct action, and an adversarial legal system.

Jan is also an author whose books include Hard Knocks: Domestic Violence and the Psychology of Storytelling and Psychiatry, Politics, and PTSD.  She sat down with S.W. Conser to talk about the tightrope she walks as both a practitioner and a critic within the world of clinical psychology.
