Will The Circle Be Unbroken

 

County music legend, Roy Acuff, once said, “I’ll play real country music, anytime, anywhere, with anyone.” In 1971 ragged bunch of long-haired hippies, known as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, reached out to Roy and asked if he’d record with them. They brought along their friends Earl Scruggs and Merle Travis. They asked Doc Watson to join them. When Doc heard that Mr. Scruggs would be there, he said, “Well if Earl’s gonna’ be there, count me in.” Maybelle Carter, Vassar Clements and Jimmy Martin rounded out the line-up. They recorded the album “Will the Circle be Unbroken” in Nashville, and it became a commercial and critical success.

In 1989, they went back to Nashville and expanded the circle to include Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, Bruce Hornsby and a few others. They spread a little folk, gospel, and into the mix and the album, Vol. 2, won the Country Music Association’s Album of the year.

In 2002, they went to well again to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of the initial recording. They invited Willie Nelson, Alison Kraus, Vince Gill, into the fold and lit up the recording studio with another batch of great songs.
