Humpday

Director: Lynn Shelton

With: Mark Duplass, Joshua Leonard, Alycia Delmore

Area theaters

Comedy about two old friends who have taken different paths in life.  One (Leonard) continues to avoid maturity by traveling and having adventures, the other (Duplass) has married (Delmore) and is settling in to domestic life.  When the old pal shows up unexpectedly at 2 AM, he tries to get his married friend back into the boho scene in Seattle.  This sets up a real crisis in the marriage, and the situation gets worse when the friends decide to do an “art” project, and do a porn film of two straight guys having sex.

While this is well-ploughed ground, and some of the scenes don’t work, in general the natural acting and real relationships between friend and friend and man and wife carry the story and the movie.  You may be surprised at how the whole thing works out.

Nice work by the actors, as much of the dialogue appears to be improvised, and a better-than-average example of what they call “mumblecore,” a genre I have not been that impressed with.
