The Abe and Joe Talk Radio Show on 01/17/12

Air date:
Tue, 01/17/2012 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
Abe and Joe marvel at "Beyond Vietnam," one of MLK's greatest speeches.

Great oratory speaks to universal and self-evident human truths, and thus remains timeless. Nearly 45 years on, Abe and Joe revisit "Beyond Vietnam," one of Dr. Martin Luther King's most powerful and prescient speeches. In it, he expresses the concept that the movements against poverty, racism and militarism are all facets of humanity's inexorable struggle toward justice and enlightenment.

Take Heart and Push Harder

We are witnessing the last desparate actions of a dying empire. Today there are more soldiers AWOL from US forces than at the height of the Vietnam War. Remember that Leiutenant Watada has still not been tried for refusing an illegal order to deploy to Iraq.

Now is not the time to relax or to compromise our demands. We must hold out for that glorious vision of a global system that works for all people. Smedley Butler's "War is a Racket" and David Swanson's "War is a Lie" should be given to each of our youth. Every time we hear that old lie about thanking soldiers for our freedom we've got to loudly proclaim "My liberty is not dependent upon the death of others! You may never kill in my name!"

Let go of the myth of the good war. Study the life of Jeanette Rankin to learn why she became the only Member of Congress to vote against both WWI and WWII. Realize that Pearl Harbor was set up to happen and war profiteering is older than this country. Thomas Paine wrote about how countries generated wars to justify taxes. War is obsolete. The world will be a better place when the Pentagon is closed and the US has no standing army.

We must all withhold our taxes as well as our youth from the military. Furthermore, we can withhold our labor and our purchases from every corporation that benefits from war. General strikes, broad boycotts, and nonviolent noncompliance are the tools of our revolution. Time has come today!
