Fischer's Hornpipe - Molly Tannen, Larry Hanks; a compilation of Berkeley old time musicians of the 60's compiled by Mike Seeger - it's for those of us who thought the only instrument Larry Hanks played was the Jew's Harp.
There's a Man Comes to Our House - Prairie Ramblers; best known for being Patsy Montana's band on 'I Wanna' Be a Cowboy's Sweethart' but they were so much more.
Downtown Blues - Frank Stokes; the composer of 'Ain't Nobody's Business if I do' among others. Half of duo calling themselves the Beale Street Sheiks.
Fort Worth Stomp - Crystal Springs Ramblers; included Joe Holly who later played in Bob Wills' Texas Playboys. Bob would call out for Jody to take a break, and boy did did he.
Cindy - Mike Seeger & Penny Seeger Cohen; another Mike Seeger project in which he performs with his sister Penny.
Golden Slippers - Dykes Magic City Trio; they were out of Kingsport, TN. They had a woman who played autoharp with them, Myrtle Vermillion who was a cousin of Sara Carter. None of us could pick out an autoharp in this recording.
G Rag - Georgie Yellowhammers
The Brilliancy Medley - Eck Robertson & Family; another performer that Mike Seeger was interested in. He got him up to the Newport Folk Festival from his home in Texas. He became the first recorded country musician. He and a friend, a confederate veteran, played for a reunion in Richmond, VA & went straight up to New York City to audition and record for Victor Records.
Can I Sleep in Your Barn Tonight Mister - Kilby Snow; the Jimi Hendrix of the autoharp. Yet another player befriended, recorded and promoted by Mike Seeger.
Barbecue Bust - Mississippi Jook Band
Old Black Choo Choo - Strange Creek Singers; one of the several band Mike Seeger was in. Thids on ncluded Hazel Dickens & Alice Gerrard.
He's Solid Gone - Maybelle Carter; and speaking of solid, check out the guitar on this selection. solid as ever.
I'm Out On the Ocean a Sailing - Leslie Riddle; Leslie was A.P. Carters tape recorder. Carter would go song collecting & write the words down, Leslie would harvest the tune.
White Horse Breakdown - Carthy Sisco; a Bremerton, WA fiddler who was written up recently in "The Old Time Herald" magazine.
Black Mountain Rag - Arthur Smith, Sam and Kirk McGee; the great and widely influential fiddlin' Arthur Smith. This is another recording by Mike Seeger. There's a great picture of Smith, fiddle under his chin and Mike Seeger's son on his lap.
Old Hen Cackle - Coleman & Harper
Why Don't You Pray for Me Sometime - Elizabeth Cotton; you could say that she discovered Mike Seeger - she worked for his parents as a maid & nanny. Later in life he returned the favor.
Memory of Your Smile - Mike Seeger, Maria Muldaur & David Grisman; Seeger even knows some of the big stars.
I'm Leaving You - Sara Carter Bayes & Maybelle Carter; Sara & Maybelle recorded by Mike Seeger in his private stash that was released a few years ago on CD.
I'm Gonna Cross the River of Jordan Some of These Days - Jaybird Coleman
Blue Guitar Stomp - Clifford Hayes Louisville Stompers; a fine fiddle player and had to be one of the busiest man on the Louisville music circuit. He played a session with Jimmy Rogers.
Mountain Dew - Grampa Jones; this version is the gold standard for Mountain Dew. The whoop that starts it off should be bottled.
