Grace Paley

The acclaimed poet and short-story writer Grace Paley died on August 22nd 2007 at the age of 84, after a long battle with breast cancer.  A life-time political activist, she helped found the Greenwich Village Peace Center in 1961, traveled on a peace mission to Hanoi in 1969, and was one of the “White house eleven,” who were arrested in 1978 for unfurling an anti-nuclear banner on the White House lawn. She was active with the American Friends Service and the war resisters league.

Grace Paley won numerous awards for her writing and served as Poet Laureate for both New York and Vermont.  She taught writing at Sarah Lawrence College and other universities.

December 11th would have been Grace Paley’s 85th birthday. Tonight on Circle A Radio, we bring you an interview with local author, Judith Arcana, who is Grace Paley’s  biographer . We’ll also hear archival recordings of Grace Paley reading her work and talking about her life.
