Chasse Settlment
announcement: The city of Portland has tentatively agreed to settle the James Chasse wrongful death lawsuit for one point six million dollars — the largest such settlement in city history.
Speaking to reporters at an afternoon City Hall press conference, Police Commissioner Dan Saltzman personally apologized to the Chasse family for his death.
Chasse was a 42-year-old man who suffered from schizophrenia. He died after a group of Portland police officers tackled him and put their full weight on his chest, breaking many of his ribs.
An autopsy showed he died from numerous internal injuries resulting from blunt force trauma to the chest.
But the Portland police Department continues to argue that the officers did nothing wrong – even after agreeing to pay over one and a half million dollars to Chasse’s family today.
