Happy Monday! This is Margaret with your community calendar for 30 March 2009.

 

The Portland Restaurant Workers Association (PRWA) is a community group of workers committed to promoting Solidarity, Support, & Education among food service workers in our city.  This evening at 7, the Association will host a forum on the

Top Five Wage and Hour Violations in Restaurants

and how to protect your rights on the job. All are welcome to attend. Be educated or be exploited!

 

The training will take place at the Black Rose Infoshop, located 4038 N. Mississippi (b/t Mason and Shaver), in North Portland.

Also this evening at 7, you are invited to a screening of the documentary *Arid Lands*.  This internationally acclaimed film is about the land and people of the Columbia River Basin and the aftermath of environmental contamination and cleanup at Hanford nuclear site. Representatives of Heart of America NW will be present to discuss the current status of the site and actions you can take to prevent further damage there.  The screening will take place at First Unitarian Church at SW 12th and Main in downtown Portland.

Tomorrow afternoon, Tuesday March 31, the Portland State University chapters of M.E.Ch.A.  and Las Mujeres invite you to join a demonstration  and march honoring the legacy of Cesar Chavez, legendary workers' rights champion and cofounder of United Farm Workers. .  This event will pay tribute to an individual who not only inspires Chicanos and Latinos, but all those who champion for workers’ rights and equality.  The demonstration will also address ongoing campaigns for comprehensive immigration reform and workers' rights  in the state of Oregon and nationwide.   The group will gather at noon at Portland State University's park blocks, on the corner of Park Ave and Harrison Street, and the march will commence soon after.

Portland Hearing Voices is  a new community learning partnership dedicated to education around hearing voices, unusual sensory experiences, and mental diversity. Tomorrow evening, Tuesday the 31, Hearing Voices invites you to a documentary film screening and discussion presenting different points of view on these little-understood phenomena.  This event is wheelchair- accessible and open to the public  and will take place at  6 PM at the meeting room of the Multnomah County Public Library's downtown branch, located at 801 SW 10th Avenue at Yamhill.
