Today's guest is Bruce Levine--psychologist, social critic and author of several books and numerous articles. His most recent book is "Get Up, Stand Up: Uniting Populists, Energizing the Defeated and Battling the Corporate Elite." He has also written "Surviving Depression" and "Commonsense Rebellion: Taking Back Your Life from Drugs, Shrinks, Corporations and a World Gone Crazy."
From the back cover of "Get Up, Stand Up": "Bruce Levine offers radical new insights into the epidemic of political passivity in America. The reality is that many Americans have lost confidence that genuine democracy is possible. Drawing on phenomena such as learned helplessness, the abuse syndrome, andother psychological principles and technizues for pacifying a population, Levine explains how major US institutions have created hslplessness and fatalism. When such defeatism sets in, truths about economic injustices and lost liberties are not enough to set people free.
"The situation, however, is not truly hopeless. 'Get Up, Stand Up' describes how we can recover dignity, energy, and unity in order to wrest power away from the corporatocracy. In other countries and during other periods of American history, people have successfully resisted domination. It is possible to restore those psychological and cultural conditions necessary for a mass democratic movement to get off the ground. 'Get Up, Stand Up' details those strategies and tactics that oppressed peoples have employed to gain power and put that power back in the hands of We the People."
