On Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at 11.30am Joseph Gallivan interviews Sean Healy about his new show Gut, which runs at the Elizabeth Leach Gallery from Nov 3 to Dec 30 2016.
Healy works in the arte povera tradition and makes multimedia works using automotive paint, cigarette filters and epoxy resin, while looking at themes of detritus and decay, masculinity, and how what is relevant changes as we age.

In Gut, Sean Healy continues his exploration of social constructs of “maleness” while dealing with the physical and mental effects of growing older. The artist seeks to mimic aging bodies by using materials that droop and sag, succumbing to gravity. In his color field painting, Speed Bump Headache, composed of layers of auto body enamel applied to a cigarette filter covered panel, enamel drips off the lower edge of the artwork creating stalactite like drips of color conveying weight to this vibrant and highly textured piece. This will be Healy’s eighth solo exhibition at the Elizabeth Leach Gallery.
Sean Healy was born in 1971 and received his BFA in Printmaking from Alfred University in 1994. In addition to his one-person exhibitions at the Elizabeth Leach Gallery, Healy has exhibited at the Betty Moody Gallery (Houston, TX) and Marylhurst University (Marylhurst, OR). He has received several important public commissions, including The Wayne L. Morse Courthouse (Eugene, OR), Pioneer Place (Portland, OR), the General Services Administration Headquarters (Eugene, OR), and the FBI Headquarters (Houston, TX). The Elizabeth Leach Gallery has represented Healy since 1999, and in 2006 published a comprehensive catalogue on his work featuring an essay by Stephanie Snyder, curator of the Cooley Gallery at Reed College.
Joseph Gallivan has been a reporter since 1990. He has covered music for the London Independent, Technology for the New York Post, and arts and culture for the Portland Tribune, where he is currently the Business Reporter.
