Here are the goals and objectives for KBOO’s 3 year Strategic Plan:

KBOO’s vision for 2017-2020 is to become Oregon’s community media hub, leveraging the power of the airwaves to support a revolution for a just and sustainable future.

It will achieve this through the pursuit of these three strategic goals:

Goal 1:

  • By 2020, KBOO has deepened its internal and external connections to build “the Beloved Community.”

Since 2014, KBOO has used the concept of the “Beloved Community” popularized by Martin Luther King Junior to give us a framework for ensuring we intentionally create space for dialogue between KBOO community members so KBOO continues to flourish as an egalitarian space for creative collaboration.

To meet this goal, in the next 3 years KBOO with create systems and opportunities to ensure that People of Color, women, trans people, youth and people with disabilities have increased access to leadership roles, programming, training and volunteer time and will report that KBOO has significantly reduced micro-aggressions and systemic oppressions- helping to make KBOO a model for anti-oppression work and a place where all people can thrive.

Goal 2:

  • By 2020, KBOO has strengthened its internal systems to live its mission and core values more effectively.

In 2018, KBOO will be 50 years and a big celebration is underway! With this goal, KBOO makes a commitment to strengthen the core internal elements that make KBOO, KBOO! For this reason, for the next three years KBOO will focus on:

  • increasing membership each year

  • achieving all priority #1 of the facilities & equipment plan which was designed to ensure our equipment and building are in good shape, well taken care of and transitioned to keep up with technology (contingent on revenue)

  • having more diversified funding to support operations and projects

  • increasing our training efficacy by retaining more volunteers

  • increasing staff sustainability and support so they feel like they can succeed in their job

Goal 3:

  • By 2020, KBOO’s dynamic programming better serves and engages the local community to connect us with the broader world.

The need for KBOO’s locally rooted, powerfully just, lovingly eclectic, vibrantly provocative grassroots content is more than ever essential to our Portland community and beyond. This is why, in the next three years, KBOO will focus on:

  • increasing listenership each year

  • completing our analog to digital archiving project and old tapes will be played on the air and made available to listened to on-line  (contingent on revenue)

  • implementing at least one new programming stream to more nimbly respond to the external environment

  • continuing to strive to be the go-to resource on a daily basis and when important things happen in the community

Thank you for taking the survey to let us know your input!

Below is a description of the collaborative process that led the creation of this Strategic Plan.

Strategic Plan Visioning Process Overview

A key part of the strategic planning is developing the vision and goals for the coming

years. Before determining the details of what KBOO will do (and how we will do it), the

visioning process engaged the board, staff, and KBOO community in a discussion

about what KBOO hopes to achieve in the next three years.

The vision was developed through the following process:

1. A two–hour visioning session with KBOO staff and board.

2. A KBOO community-wide survey offered online in English and Spanish and via

hard-copy paper surveys at the station.

3. One-on-one conversations and interviews with members, staff, and board.

4. Two focus groups, one specifically for KBOO programmers and a second for

any KBOO members.

5. A four-hour facilitated reflection and visioning session with KBOO staff and

board that examined all of the collected data and themes from the survey and

focus groups, from which a few key themes and goals emerged.

6. Reflection, review, and finalization of these themes and draft goal language by

the Strategic Planning Support Work Group (which includes representation by

KBOO staff, board, and members).

Participation and Response

This visioning process engaged approximately 120 members of the KBOO community

via survey (92 participants), focus groups and one-on-one conversations (19

participants), board and staff workshops (21 participants) and the Strategic Planning

Support Working Group (2 unique participants, 3 board / staff members).

Participants in groups represented a broad range of ages, sexual orientations, gender

identities, races, ethnicities, abilities, classes, and lengths of involvement with KBOO.

Some participants were primary Spanish speakers.

Although both the consultants and Strategic Planning Support Work Group felt that

participation in the visioning process was strong and representative of the engaged

membership, it was noted that outreach via US mail or more online outreach from the

staff might be helpful in the future.
