Red and Black cafe
The Red and Black Café in Southeast Portland is like many other small businesses facing the challenge of gentrification. The building site on SE Division had been sold to a developer who plans to start major renovations when their lease expires this year.
A member of the collective that runs the Red and Black, John Langley says tenants have the option to move back in after the renovations but that the café could not survive being closed during an undetermined period of renovation.
Red and Black’s rent is now about $1800 and tenants fear rent could double in the renovated building.
John Langley spoke to reporter Craig Burk about the issue.
