The Abe and Joe Talk Radio Show on 07/10/12

Short Description:
The Great July 4 Blow-up of 2012. Abe discusses some listener feedback.

Last week's discussion, as can happen at KBOO, veered into unexpectedly heated and fertile territory. Who knew that July 4 fireworks could be the source of such controversy?

The resulting discourse begged several questions: What is the nature of progressivism? What does it mean to be a liberal in the early 21st Century? What is our struggle about, and how ought we to struggle? Why should we struggle in the first place? And just how pretentious is talk radio, anyway?

Bigger Issues

 Hello Abe.

I caught some of last week's show on 7/3. I then listened to the 'Voices From the Edge' program on 7/5. I rarely call into radio shows (I typically just listen), but on one of those rare occasions I tried to call into todays' show. Very busy lines, hence, my commenting here. My attitude/opinion concerning fireworks is pretty ambivalent. I use to love 'em as a child, but pretty much grew out of them as an adult. I still like looking at them, and if my friends or housemates have them, I'll shoot them off. It's just not something I spend my money on, that's it.

But it never occurred to me that soo many other people [apparently] have such an emotional, damn-near hysterical reaction to fireworks. And listening to the Voices... program last week, I thought it was pretty revolting how the entire program (which was suppose to have been open to various topics, according to host Dave Mazza) got completely usurpted by this silly fireworks debate, along with most of the callers - as well as the host "calling you out". I wanted to call into that show as well, but had to be at work in an hour and could only listen; I probably wouldn't have gotten through, anyways.

And it is news to me that fireworks somehow implys "war culture" and that they "indoctrinate" kids and that there was this huge issue of MALE patriarchy riding total rough-shot over all else. Funny, because I always assumed that women enjoyed fireworks too. Alot of them do. My female housemate certainly enjoyed watching them last week (apparently, that makes her a self-loathing female bowing into male patriarchy). Even our dogs weren't really bothered by the noise (maybe our animals are weird???). In our neighborhood (NE Cully), the barage lasted for afew hours, it was fun to watch, and it was pretty much over by around 11pm. Noone has to hear it again until NYE. Until then, I suppose some folks will just have to find some other niche issue to get all bent out of shape over.

I don't care about fireworks, nor July 4th. I kinda think this country stinks, actually. What I care about is racism, police terrorism, religious tyranny, and corporate oppression. In other words... BIG serious stuff.

I'll keep listening Abe, yours is a great show.
