The cumulative effects of shipping millions of tons of coal via train from MT and WY

COAL AWAY!

The battle over coal trains carrying Powder River coal across the Pacific Northwest has been heating up in recent months. Plans have been withdrawn for three of the six terminals proposed in Washington and Oregon, where the coal would be transferred from trains to ships bound for Asia. But the struggle to stop the coal trains is far from over. On this episode of Locus Focus we talk with Ryan Alexander with Taxpayers for Common Sense about the cumulative effects of shipping millions of tons of coal via train from Montana and Wyoming to ports on the West Coast. We'll discuss how these mile long uncovered coal trains will exacerbate pollution, health concerns, traffic congestion and climate change, just to feed Asia's insatiable appetite for burning coal.

Ryan Alexander joined Taxpayers for Common Sense as president in 2006, after serving on the board for more than seven years. She testifies regularly in Congress on a wide range of topics relating to federal spending, subsidies, and fiscal policy, and her comments have been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, and on CNN, Fox News, CBS News, ABC News, and NPR, among other outlets. Over the past two decades, Ryan has served as a litigating attorney, funder, small business owner, and nonprofit executive. Ryan co-founded Appalachian Mountain Advocates, which she continues to chair, and sits on the boards of directors of the Fund for Constitutional Government, Project on Government Oversight, and R Street Institute.
