Ted Kerasote on environmental consequences of everyday choices we make for the dogs in our lives.

PUKKA'S PROMISE: The Quest for Longer-Lived Dogs

This week on Locus Focus we celebrate Earth Day in the company of our four-pawed best friends. When nature writer Ted Kerasote was ready for a new puppy he wanted to find out how it was possible to give his new dog the longest and healthiest life possible. Traveling the world and interviewing breeders, veterinarians and leaders of the animal-welfare movement, he has pulled together the latest research in his new book PUKKA'S PROMISE: The Quest for Longer-Lived Dogs to help us rethink the everyday choices we make for our furry companions. On this episode of Locus Focus Ted joins us to talk about how raising a dog with consciousness is an environmental issue.

Ted Kerasote is the author of many books, including Merle's Door: Lessons from a Freethinking Dog and Out There: In the Wild in a Wired Age. His essays and photographs have appeared in Audubon, Geo, Outside, National Geographic Traveler, Sports Afield and the New York Times.
