Josh Harper of the SHAC 7

KBOO's Jenka Soderberg speaks with former political prisoner Josh Harper, who spent three years in prison with 'terrorism' charges for giving a speech in which he explained how to send faxes of black paper to try to waste toner.

Harper is one of the SHAC 7 --  6 animal rights activists and the organization Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty USA (SHAC USA) who were convicted on March 2, 2006, under the controversial Federal Animal Enterprise Protection Act. The Act punishes anyone who "physically disrupts" an animal enterprise. The charges stem from these activists' alleged participation in an international campaign to close the notorious product testing lab Huntingdon Life Sciences.

Specifically, these activists are alleged to have operated a website that reported on and expressed ideological support for protest activity against Huntingdon and its business affiliates. For this they are charged with "terrorism" and face an aggregate of 23 years in Federal Prison.

Judges are (usually) elected. It's crucial we start naming judges so people know how to vote & who to vote against. Who was the judge in Josh's case?

The SHAC 7 case was federal and was presided over by judge Anne Thompson, an appointee of Jimmy Carter. Federal judges are not elected, they are selected by the President. Since the President is selected more by fundraising than votes, I don't think it is safe to suggest that voting is an effective method of changing the world. Remember, %94 of elections go to the candidate with the most money and most of that money does not come from people like us, it comes from corporations who expect their interests to be protected. Beyond that, most KBOO listeners would have voted for Anne Thompson without ever knowing that she supports anonymous "terrorism" juries for activists. She was the first woman of color to be appointed as a federal judge, something heralded by the left despite her questionable politics and ethics. Judge Ann Aiken, who presided over the "green scare" sentencings in Eugene is also a liberal, as is the man currently responsible for bombing civilians in undeclared wars around the world.

Instead of worrying about who we elect I think perhaps we should be more worried about who has power, how that power will corrupt them, and what we can do to take that power out of their hands.
