-> Bill Resnick talks with historian Bill Smaldone about the rise through the late 19th and early 20th centuries of German Social Democracy, the most radical mass movement towards radically democratic socialism, including the goal of worker ownership and control of industry and the liberation of women; in the breakdown of Germany after World War I they took power in the form of radical city councils, but then were defeated by a coalition of left reformist and conservative forces and the reconstituting army and police. Bill Smaldone teaches at Willamette University, served as a Green on the Salem City Council, and has written a great deal including the books Confronting Hitler: German Social Democrats in Defense of the Weimar Republic, 1929-1933 and Rudolf Hilferding: The Tragedy of a German Social Democrat.
