Disaster strikes! How can we be prepared, and how can bicycles help us manage in a time of crisis?

Disaster strikes! How can we be prepared, and how can bicycles help us manage in a time of crisis? Start July 4th with a bang and join us 11am for a show about disaster relief and bikes. Our guests:

  •  Carmen Merlo, Director of the Portland Bureau of Emergency Management
Carmen Merlo has served as the Director of the Portland Bureau of Emergency Management since 2007. She leads the activities of the bureau to maintain the city’s overall emergency management mitigation, response, and recovery strategy; coordinates bureau and City response and recovery efforts; and oversees the activation and expansion of the City’s Emergency Coordination Center and Neighborhood Emergency Teams.
Ms. Merlo previously worked for 10 years at the State Office of Homeland Security / Oregon Emergency Management administering grant funds to improve local, regional and state capabilities to respond to and recover from emergencies. She earned a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice from the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, School of Criminal Justice in New York.
  •  Ethan Jewett, Organizer of this year's inaugural Disaster Relief Trials
Ethan Jewett is one of the founding members of Shift (he actually came up with the name) and having become a dad, is now deeply smitten with cargo bikes (he's on his second one). He volunteers with Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue and Portland's Neighborhood Emergency Team program. Bringing those two passions together, he joined Mike Cobb and Travis Wittwer in staging the first inaugural Disaster Relief Trials on Father's Day.
