Drinking from Puddles on 07/21/10
When I first saw Calamity Jane at the long defunct The Blue Gallery here in Portland, Or. I was so floored by their songs and powerful performance I just had to go up and let 'em know after the set. In that first conversation with Gilly Ann Hanner she let me know that the band was in the process of moving to Portland! And although now this city is one of the most common places for a band to move to and pursue their musical dreams and aspirations, in 1989 or 1990 that just wasn't done. Oh, musicians would move here, but because of some other factors in their life which brought them. No one moved to Portland to stake their claim! It was a commonly held belief, that to get noticed in a musical way, you would have to leave Portland...and I had recently had a couple of my favorite local bands and musicians relocate elsewhere in line with that maxim. I remember the moment the words came out of Gilly's mouth the same way a kid remembers getting a new bicycle for Christmas...
Here twenty-odd years later I'm delighted to host the premiere of the Calamity Jane reunion on Drinking From Puddles...one of only two performances scheduled at this time. Gilly's been on the program several times over this span, with other ensembles (Starpower, Braille Stars, Semi-Sweet) and solo (an appearance that was scheduled to have been Calamity Jane, and was during that C.J. era---a song from which is included on the DFP LP & CD) , but this appearance will have been two decades in the making!! It's my brand new bike all over again...and I can't wait to go for a ride...Brandon/DFP
