Trans Kids: Gender Variant Youth

KBOO’s Gender Blender show is thrilled to announce “Trans Kids: Issues Facing Gender Variant Youth,”  an hour-long show featuring Jenn Burleton, founder and executive director of TransActive Education & Advocacy, Cris Beam, Lambda Literary Award-winning author of TransParent: Love, Family, and Living the T with Transgender Teenagers; and music from Athens Boys Choir.

In the mid-1960’s, then 12-year-old Jenn Burleton became one of the first—albeit unsanctioned—trans youth to begin hormone treatments; after she discovered Dr. Harry Benjamin’s The Transsexual Phenomenon and began stealing her mother’s Premarin. She later founded TransActive Education & Advocacy (transactiveonline.org), an organization, committed to providing education and resources to family and service providers of gender vairant youth.Burleton also produced Out Of The Shadows, the short film about gender variant children that has been viewed over 300,000 times on YouTube.

The episode airs Tuesday, October 21st, 6-7 pm PST on KBOO 90.7 fm in Portland, Oregon, and streams live online at kboo.fm.

As trans-identified journalists, co-hosts Jacob Anderson-Minshall and Rebecca Nay are particularly excited about dedicating the entire hour to this important subject. “Things have changed so much since we were young,” Anderson-Minshall explains, “and now trans kids are coming out younger and younger.”

Rebecca Nay runs Trannywreck Radio, and Jacob Anderson-Minshall writes the syndicated column, TransNation.

Cris Beam is a journalist who has written for numerous magazines, has an MFA in nonfiction from Columbia University and teaches creative writing at Columbia and the New School. Her award winning memoir, TransParent recalls the seven years she spent working with trans youth, many of them living on the streets of Los Angeles.

Athens Boys Choir—aka the mad rhyming spoken word poet Katz based out of Athens, Georgia began touring in 2003. Now the self-produced, solo perfomer, who identifies as a pansexual transsexual just released his fifth album; tongue-in-cheek-titled, Bar Mitzvah Superhits of the ‘80s, ‘90s and Today.  Gender Blender will be playing several of Athens Boys' songs and a short clip from an interview with him.  Katz will be performing at Friday, 8pm, Portland's SMYRC.

Gender Blender airs once a month on KBOO. The show encourages listeners to get involved by calling (503) 231-8187 and sharing their questions and comments on air.  For more information, visit kboo.fm or email genderblenderradio@gmail.com.
