Poistcard from Benghazi
From Cairo to Bengazi, outraged Islamists are letting the world’s biggest Bull in the world’s most brittle china shop that insulting other people’s religious tenets is a mistake. America is so far from achieving anything that remotely resembles diplomacy as to render the term meaningless. At one end of the spectrum we have war and torture; at the other we have ignorant, shambling, fart-joke antics. The world is not laughing – nor is it running for cover. With the American Empire waning and the Chinese economic star rising, it would behoove us to show a bit of respect for other traditions and cultures…if only on behalf of enlightened self-interest. We simply cannot afford to continue galloping around the globe firing our six-guns and yukking it up. The U.S. ambassador to Libya and three embassy staff were killed in an attack on the Benghazi consulate and a safe house refuge, stormed by Islamist gunmen blaming America for a film they said insulted the Prophet Mohammad.
The Oregon Trail...
The Republican Party office is in - where else? - Lake-O. And as it was when Willie Sutton was asked, Q: 'Why do you rob banks?' A: 'Because that's where the money is.'...So Oregon Action takes out to Lake Oswego at 3 pm today yto present GOPpies with their cheques for $160 thousand dollars. Why that number? Because Mitt Romney and members of Congress recently voted to extend the Bush-era tax cuts for the richest 2 percent--giving people who make over $1 million a year an average tax cut of $160,000--while raising taxes on 25 million working Americans.
Local Event Part of Nationwide Day of Action Demanding Elected Officials Denounce Their Vote to Extend Bush Tax Cuts for Richest 2% or Pay the Price in November
What: Protest against the Multnomah County Republicans as part of National Day of Action against Mitt Romney and members of Congress who recently voted to extend the Bush-era tax cuts for the richest 2 percent--giving people who make over $1 million a year an average tax cut of $160,000--while raising taxes on 25 million working Americans. To symbolize this vote, protesters will deliver to the Multnomah County Republicans a massive $160,000 check from Mitt Romney with his photo on it payable to “Millionaires” and hand out similar $160,000 checks to observers.
Protesters also will unveil a hard-hitting web ad produced by the Americans for Tax Fairness Action Fund that illustrates with painful clarity the way in which some Members of Congress have doled out special tax breaks for their wealthiest supporters. “Did you know nearly every Republican in Congress recently voted to give millionaires an average tax break of $160,000 a year? They also voted to raise taxes on 25 million working families! Help stop politician from the Republican Party from giving huge tax breaks to their millionaire donors, paid for by slashing priorities like Medicare and education. It’s time for the richest 2 percent to pay their fair share. Find out more at: www.ChecksForMillionaires.com.” Tax fairness is expected to be a major issue in the November election.
Why: The bill that the Republican s recently voted for, called the Hatch Amendment in the Senate H.R. 8 in the House, would raise taxes on 25 million working families in order to help provide a $160,000 tax break to millionaires. Taxes would be raised by ending a tax credit that helps make college affordable (the American Opportunity Tax Credit) and ending improvements to the Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit. Ending the Bush tax cuts for the richest 2 percent would raise $1 trillion in revenues over 10 years, which could be used to protect middle-class priorities and reduce the deficit.
