Director Butch Flowers tells us about Northwest Classical Theatre Company's Measure For Measure which opens Friday June 22nd and runs through July 15 th (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 7:30pm Sunday at 2pm) at the Shoe Box Theater (2110 SE 10th Avenue) in Portland.Flowers talks about his history with this company, why Measure for Measureis considered a 'problem play' and his personal love of Shakespeare.
Play synopsis: Measure For Measure focuses on Angelo, who is asked to rule by the Duke of Vienna (who pretends to leave town but instead dresses as a friar to observe the goings-on in his absence). Angelo is strict, moralistic, and unwavering in his decision-making; he arrests and condemns a young man (Claudio) for impregnating his lover before marriage.
Isabella, Claudio's sister, is about to enter a nunnery when her brother is arrested. When she hears of her brother's arrest, she goes to Angelo to beg him for mercy. He refuses, but suggests that there might be some way to change his mind.

Then Dmae goes to England, to the land of Shakespeare's birth to play a feature piece about the Fisherman's Friends in Port Isaac, Cornwall. This piece originally aired on PRI's The World.
For more than 15, the Fisherman’s Friends have been singing sea shanties as a group in Port Isaac, Cornwall. During the summer, the ten men give free concerts in the old harbor drawing crowds of 3000 or more. The picturesque village has been highlighted in films and TV shows—mostly recently the popular Doc Martin series.
But the Fisherman’s Friends with their masterful harmonies and lively performances remain the heart of local culture. With a 1.6 million dollar recording contract (1 million pounds - that’s according to the Guardian) , the group is gaining worldwide attention.

Next, Dmae talks with Milepost 5's Claire Willett and Post 5's Theatre's Ty Boice about the Summer of Shakespeare Festival with numerous companies. Post 5 Theatre is also offering two productiosn of their own in the courtyard at Milespost 5.

Portland Actors Ensemble's Shakespeare in the Parks series presents two free summer productions: The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, which will be performed over five weekends primarily at Lone Fir Cemetery in SE Portland, and Twelfth Night, or What You Will, which travels to metro-area parks over a seven-weekend run.
Hamlet will run Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings at 7:00 pm from June 14 through July 14 .
