A Community in Transition
As the transgender community gains wider visibility, there's been a growing awareness of the transformation involved in a person's gender transition. But what about the Trans person's friends, family, co-workers or partners? How must they change in order to accept the transgender person they care about?
Hosts Jacob Anderson-Minshall and Rebecca Nay were joined in the studio by Brooks Nelson who is a Portland Area filmmaker who created a documentary called Switch: A Community in Transition. The film examines the role that friends, co-workers and the community itself play in an individual's gender transition. The film will be shown in Portland on Wednesday, February 4th, 2009 at The Hollywood Theatre, which is located at NE Sandy Blvd.
Brooks was in the studio with his partner of thirteen years, Jeanne Lafrance. Jeannie is the program coordinator for Portland Community College's Illumination Project. Also joining us was Diane Anderson-Minshall, who is the Chief editor of Curve and Jake's wife. Both spoke about the challenges they faced as their partners underwent a gender transition.
