Left and Right Worries about bureaucracy
The modern bureaucratic state was built during the New Deal and World War II by liberals who had doubts about a big state with a big bureaucracy. Anne Kornhauser tells the story in her book Debating the American State: Liberal Anxieties and the New Leviathan, 1930-1970. Here she talks with the Old Mole’s Bill Resnick about how efforts to reduce and control bureaucracy differed on the right and the left, and about how to democratize the state.
