The United Farm Workers are organizing dairy workers associated with Darigold in Washington state.  Jamie Partridge interviews UFW organizer Indira Trejo and Luis, a dairy worker, about their struggles for safe, dignified and healthy working conditions. 

In the second half of the show, John Walsh interviews Jhon Jairo Castro, president of the Buenaventura, Colombia chapter of the Unión Portuaria, the dockworkers’ union.  Buenaventura is Colombia’s biggest port and ground zero of the contradictions of free trade, where wealth both commercial and illicit flows through an impoverished and violence-stricken city with a predominantly Afro-Colombian population.

The first half of this weeks show features excerpts from a community hearing on the City of Portland Fair Wage Policy, which drew over a hundred low-wage workers and their allies, who testified before representatives of Mayor Hales and Commissioner Saltman.  Janitors, security guards, parking attendants, civic stadium and others who work for companies that contract with the City are fighting for a fifteen dollar fair wage.  In the second half of the show, we hear excerpts from a rally outside the US Citizenship and Immigration Service office in support of Francisco Aguirre, a day labor organizer facing deportation, who has taken refuge in the sanctuary of Augustana Church.

Portland has a Fair Wage Policy for workers at companies that contract with the City.  Currently, the wage for janitors, security guards, parking attendants, civic stadium workers and others, is $10.38 per hour.  A community hearing Monday evening, attended by over a hundred low-wage workers and their allies, presented testimonty to representives from Mayor Hales and Commissioner Saltzman, urging the Commissioners to raise the "fair wage" to $15 per hour.  The first speaker is Marty Hart-Landsberg, an economics professor at  Lewis and Clark College, followed by Jamie Partridge, a 15 NOW pdx organizer, then Linda Sporer, a security guard at the City.

Grassroots Campaign Workers Organize for Respect

Campaign Workers United are fighting for respect at Grassroots Campaign Incorporated.  GCI, a national for-profit fundraiser in eighteen cities, contracts with progressive organizations to raise money on the street.  All the canvassers at the Portland GCI branch have organized a union, with the assistance of the Industrial Workers of the World, and presented their demands to local management at the  East Burnside GCI office Saturday morning.  KBOO labor reporter Jamie Partridge was on the scene, with canvassers Andrew Lee and Liana Clark.
