In 2009, the desire to progress humankind while preserving the environment brought Patrick Beaulieu-Hardin (guitar) and Nate Stoll (drums) together at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR. While both had a passion for the environment, they had an even bigger passion for music. Their musical and environmental connection was strong from the start, but they needed a name for their burgeoning craft. With bands cropping up everywhere using environmental cues for their monikers (knowingly or not) like Fleet Foxes, Arctic Monkeys, Animal Collective, and Wolf Parade, Patrick came up with what he thought at the time was one of the most mocking and absurd band names he could think of: White Bear Polar Tundra.

For three years, the band’s climate swung all over from avant-garde improvisational post-rock to straight-ahead prog rock. The name that started as a ridiculous inside joke began to blossom into something bigger. In 2012, the aptly-named Ethan Bear (bass) and Zein Hassanein (vocals) joined the two-piece band. With Zein and Ethan came funky bass and shimmering vocals to fill out Patrick and Nate’s progressive rock songs. In the next year they wrote and produced their debut album, Strikes Back.

With all the right parts in place, the once-absurd name took new meaning. White Bear Polar Tundra stands for environmental progress amongst an ocean of commercial waste that is now sadly the state of rock music. With a conscientious DIY ethic, the band strives to make progressive, head-turning music. Waste little, want not.
