The Unconscious Civilization

Air date:
Mon, 08/24/2015 - 10:00pm - 11:00pm
Short Description:
The Union of Time Thieves: The Unconscious Civilization

The Union of Time Thieves brings you John Ralston Saul's 1995 lecture, entitled "The Unconscious Civilization." He argues that society is only superficially based on the individual and democracy. Increasingly it is conformist and corporatist, a society in which legitimacy lies with specialist or interest groups and decisions are made through constant negotiations between these groups.  The paradox of our situation is that knowledge has not made us conscious. Instead, we have sought refuge in a world of illusion where language is cut off from reality.

The Union of Time Thieves: Ai Ferri Corti
Originally published in 1998 as Ai ferri corti con l’esistente, i suoi difensori e i suoi falsi critici, this text incorporates the Situationist idea of the Spectacle as the status quo that activists must consider when taking on the project of revolution. This critique of various forms of resistance in the age of globalization was translated by Jean Weir and first published in English as At Daggers Drawn. Join us for an hour of reading and music as The Union of Time Thieves explores stealing back time and space.

Homo Ludens and The Festival

Air date:
Mon, 04/27/2015 - 10:00pm - 11:00pm
Short Description:
The Union of Time Thieves: Homo Ludens and The Festival
"For the Situationists, play was to flow spontaneously from the desires of each individual so that finally there would be no sense of boredom and no rupture between moments of play and non-play," said Jan Bryant. The idea of "play" and the everyday is one of the central critiques of the Situationist International, and is often used in the interventions they proposed in opposition to the Spectacle. Join us for a literary and musical exploration of this theme as we welcome Aspen Walker and Shampton Mononymous to the Union of Time Thieves!
