Political Perspectives on 05/01/13
Joe Clement hosts a special May Day Political Perspectives hour about the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), a union for all workers with the revolutionary aspiration of abolishing the wage-system. They've been known as "the singing union", "the wobblies", and what Hunter S. Thompson once called "the last human concept in American politics". Notable founding members include Mother Jones, Emma Goldman, and Eugene Debs. A few members of the Portland Branch of the IWW appear as guests.
At the center of the show will be a discussion of a pamphlet you can read in about 15 minutes titled "Think It Over: an introduction to the IWW". In that vein, they'll consider the IWW today and how you can attend an introduction class or organizer training - or even sign up. They also reflect on the IWW's enduring importance in the labor movement and the radical origins of May Day. They'll be taking calls (503-231-8187) and playing music that celebrates workers and their struggle for a better world.
