Queer Documentary Film Festival guests on May 20

Categories:

Our discussion this week turns to QDoc, the only queer documentary film festival in the US,  happening May 29 thru June 1 at the Clinton St Theater.

Time to come out of hibernation!

First of all I want to thank all the volunteers who helped with the Amy Goodman/David Goodman benefit we did last month. It was a great success and we raised about $16,000. Upcoming benefits include the Pink Martini Fundfest in June at the Crystal Ballroom with KBOO as one of the 4 non-profit beneficiaries. Big thanks to Pink Martini for choosing KBOO this year! And don't forget, the monthly KBOO Reggae Benefit happens May 24 at the Blue Monk and features Nuborn Tribe w/ Ital Vibes.

mother's day for peace

Yesterday was Mother’s Day, and by some counts it was the one-hundredth anniversary of Mother’s Day in the US . In 1870, social activist Julia Ward Howe wrote her Mother's Day Proclamation as a call for peace and disarmament, a call to unite women to organize against war.

Day of Silence focused call-in show on Tues 4/29

Categories:

The National Day of Silence was Friday April 25th. This is the largest student-led day of action in the country. Many schools in the Portland metro area, as well as nationally, participated in this event. This year's event was held in honor of Lawrence King, a 15 year old killed in school by a classmate because he was gay and non-gender conforming.

Did you participate in the Day of Silence at your school? Would you like to tell your story on the radio?

For our next Out Loud show, I'd like to invite Day of Silence participants to call into the radio show to tell their story to our listeners - live!

On-Air Changes: August 2008

Our board of directors set a goal back in December to, “Increase listenership to better serve programming charter and increase membership with quality programs and improved scheduling while reflecting our core values.” These directives took on a new urgency as we saw Portland’s jazz, classical and NPR stations increase listenership while ours declined! This impacts budgeting, Corporation for Public Broadcasting eligibility, and—most importantly—service of KBOO’s mission. If you’re curious about the budget hit, we made our goal for the recent Spring Membership Drive, but we had to set the goal $40,000 lower than three years ago.
