NYC-based songwriter Matt Keating appears on Anodyne to co-host and play some songs live.

ANODYNE welcomes NYC-based singer/songwriter Matt Keating to the KBOO studios August 17th. Matt's music melds the country feel of Willie Nelson with the classic songwriter sounds of a Ron Sexsmith or an Elvis Costello. New York Times says that "his tunes are clear-cut, and his confessions and uncertainty ring true". Matt will co-host, spinning some of his favorite tracks and also playing live versions of songs from his new EP "Between Customers" 3-5am.

Expect a few tributes to Jim Dickinson and Les Paul, two musical legends who passed away this week.

3 hours of local music this AM courtesy of PDX Pop Now

Good news! The 2009 PDX Pop Now! compilation is out this week! It seems like the perfect time to pull out ALL SIX PDX Pop Now compilations and throw together a local music show.

PDX Pop Now began in 2004, it is a non-profit org that produces this amazing festival each summer. All local music, free to the public (all ages). Each year they also release a two-disc compilation of local music.

Here's a good guess of some bands I'll be playing on the show this morning: Viva Voce, Sleater-Kinney, Thermals, YACHT, The Blow, Talkdemonic, Shaky Hands, Menomena, Syndel.

I'll be playing highlights from the first year of ANODYNE. Tune in!

"What do I play next?" is my favorite question as a KBOO DJ. And every once in awhile, I'll have a revelatory moment or a hunch that pays off with a great combination of songs.

For the one year anniversary of ANODYNE on KBOO, I'll be featuring as many of these moments as I can remember. Also during the year I've had five musical guests on my show, and I'll be featuring a favorite song from each of those sessions.

This special program coincides with KBOO's spring membership drive, so if ANODYNE has enhanced the quality of your late-night/early-morning hours, please become a member today. Simply put, KBOO cannot broadcast without you.

Thanks!

Join me this morning as we celebrate Record Store Day!

Portland mayor Sam Adams declared this past Saturday (April 18th) to be Record Store Day. Good thing, too, because we were already celebrating it on a national level. The cynics will sneer about a last minute cash-grab attempt from a dying industry, but the aficionados will be raving about the rare releases that came from it!

Robyn Hitchcock celebrates birthday #56 on March 3rd. In honor of the occasion, ANODYNE will re-air its Soft Boys / Robyn Hitchcock retrospective. The special was produced last fall to coincide with KBOO's fall membership drive. It runs chronologically, beginning with a Soft Boys bedroom demo from 1977 and ending with a track from Robyn's brand new album "Goodnight Oslo", recorded with The Venus 3 (and out now on Yep Roc records).

I'll also be giving away a copy of "Goodnight Oslo". Check out ANODYNE's twitter account at http://www.twitter.com/anodyneradio early Monday am to get the details.

Mick Karn was the bass player for 80's new-wave/glam band Japan. Not only that, he played on quite a few other records that I’ve enjoyed since my high school days. He passed away this past weekend, and I pulled out some of those favorite records and brought them down to play in his memory.

I already had quite a few new wavey tracks slated to play on the show, so all in all it was quite the “skinny tie affair”.
