Cara Dugas reviews Robert Clift's "Blacking Up: hiphop's remixing of race and identity", a new documentary about cultural appropriation and white hip-hop. Clift is a white hip-hop artist himself. His interrogation of the subject goes back to minstral shows and asks: are they really the same? The response by white artists reveals ignorance at best and disavowed racism at worst. In the end, Cara reflects on the economic power that whites in determining trends in music.
