Prisons as Slavery: Robert King of The Angola 3

Robert Hillary King author and the only member of The Angola 3 to be freed from jail joins host Linda Olson-Osterlund to give an update on the cases of the A3 and to talk about prisons as modern slavery. Herman Wallace and Albert Woodfox have spent 37 years in solitary confinement. Black Panther activists, convicted of a crime they did not commit they each have impending court cases that could free them. They along with Robert King also have a Federal Civil Rights lawsuit that could come down with a decision any day. Learn about these cases and more.

The Slave Next Door; Part 2 : An Oregon Report
Learn about Human Trafficking and Slavery in Oregon from the voices of those who's jobs have them confront this modern day horror every day. Host Linda Olson-Osterlund interviewed Deputy Kieth Bickford chair of the Oregon Human Trafficking Taskforce, the organization tapped to help bring together the myriad number of federal, state and local agencies involved in combating trafficking. Oregon is a West Coast destination city and trafficking hub for sex trafficking of underage minors. James Pond founder and President of Transitions Global, a shelter care program for rescued victims, talks about the particular problems and needs of underage victims of trafficking. Chris Kilmer of Oregon Catholic Charities program serving immigrant victims of Human Trafficking describes the victims they see and the services they deliver. Amrit Djillon immigration attorney with Catholic Charities, describes the victims she represents. Theycome out of enslavement in domestic servitude or forced labor in agriculture, foresty and construction. She describes the differnt types of visas she works to get so her clients can remain in the country and recieve essential services while the court cases are being persued.

The Slave Next Door; Part 1: Interview with the author Kevin Bales

Author and anti-slavery activist Kevin Bales is interviewed by host Linda Olson-Osterlund about his new book The Slave Next Door: Human Trafficking and Slavery in America Today, co-authored with historian Ron Soodalter. Bales' earlier book on modern slavery, Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy was nominated for a Pullitzer Prize and is largely responsible for shining the international spotlight on this subject. He is the President of the organization Free The Slaves in Washington D.C. In this interview he uses real examples to talk about the different types of slavery that are found throughout our nation. How slaves are hidden among us. Sometimes in the fields or forests but often in urban settings. From household slaves, who often face the most brutal and longest lasting enslavement to construction workers brought in after a disaster.
