On June 26 we first spoke with Latoya Harris who's daughter (9-years old at the time) was handcuffed at her home dressed only in a swimsuit - and days following a playground tiff that had long since been resolved. No case was ever brought, not by a DA, nor by our 'self-defeating police accountability system. I will speak with Latoya's and her daughter to update you on this ongoing story. Portland police Officer David McCarthy and Officer Matthew Huspek, who are assigned to a special police detail at New Columbia, have no business working with kids!

Discussion on City hall's latest community initiative to intervene on gang violence

Air date:
Thu, 07/10/2014 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
Review of Mayor's & Police Chief's new gang intervention initiative-Police paid community not.

It's summer time in Portland so gangs must be on the rise, as per Chief Mike Reese, Portland Police Bureau.  Yesterday Multnomah County Local Public Safety Council released a 500 page report met to make us all afraid that gang activity in Multnomah County is running rampant.  I wish we could believe the source of this data but having reviewed the lopsided survey sent out to the public to support this notion its sole goal is to convince the community to volunteer to stop gang violence and pay the cops overtime for gang work.  It is the normal public-private partnership where the public law enforcement agencies get resources (up to $200,000 for enforcement activities vs the volunteer community support.

Camron Doss, District Director, U.S. Small Business Administration interview on U.S. Small Business

Join Camron & I tomorrow morning for Voices from the Edge. With many segments of our community shut out of the job market many are turning to starting their own business. Small businesses help drive Portland’s economy in a big way. 95 percent of businesses in Portland employ less than 50 people, and 76 percent employ less than 10. These small businesses deliver essential goods and services across the community. Here are some more big facts about our small businesses: -More than half of Americans own or work for a small business. -Small businesses create 2 out of every 3 new U.S. jobs. -98% of Portland’s neighborhood businesses have 5 or fewer employees. In honor of National Small Business Week I’ve invited Camron Doss, District Director, U.S.

program date:
Thu, 08/05/2010

This week on Voices from the Edge, Jo Ann and Dave looked at the good and bad news of the week. Topics discussed included: federal funds being made available to Oregon to address budget shortfalls and whether those dollars will reach the people who really are in need; the impact of the new president of the Portland Police Association; shortcomings and risks with new assistance being offered to homeowners facing foreclosure; and missed economic development opportunities in emerging technologies.

Voices from the Edge on 07/29/2010

program date:
Thu, 07/29/2010

Oregon House District 43 is one of the most diverse in the state.  It also faces some of the biggest challenges:  high unemployment, high rates of police misconduct, high displacement from gentrification.

This week Dave and Jo Ann talked with State Rep. Lew Frederick about what role the state can play in addressing some of these problems.

Voices from the Edge on 07/22/2010

program date:
Thu, 07/22/2010

This week on Voices from the Edge, Jo Ann and Dave ask the question "Are the good guys ahead?" Local progressive may be feeling a bit down over the direction of local and state politics lately. City Hall seems more disconnected than ever from the world in which most Portlanders live. Earlier this week, city council voted 4-1 (Commissioner Fritz abstaining) to put a new bond measure before voters for a new communications system and other equipment for the Fire Bureau. With so many city services taking hits - and at least on other proposed bond measure being put on hold because of the economy - should there have been a community discussion about whether this measure could wait? Oregon's gubernatorial race - "Doc vs. Jock" - is creating little light and even less heat as former Governor Kitzhaber talks about what he did and challenger Chris Dudley goes on a family outing rather than answers questions from the local media - all of this happening as Governor Kulogoski gets ready to leave his office and a $2 billion shortfall behind.

Join us as we look at these and other issues that make us ask "Are the good guys ahead?"

Next week on Voices from the Edge, Dave and Jo Ann speak with State Representative Lew Frederick (D-District 43) about the key issues in his northeast Portland district and his efforts to create greater police accountability.

Voices from the Edge on 07/15/2010

program date:
Thu, 07/15/2010

Portland City Council voted 3-2 this morning to let police unit commanders have a vote in certain cases before the new police review board.  Does this make the new board "structurally flawed" or does it increase accountability as commissioners supporting the change claim? Voices from the Edge Hosts Dave Mazza and Jo Ann talk about this new development.

"A Conversation with The Fire Frashour Campaign"

Should Portland Police officers Ronald Frashour, Chris Humphreys and others involved in the death of Portland residents in recent years be fired immediately? These are just some of the demands that will be made at a demonstration sponsored by the Fire Frashour Campaign at 4 p.m. this Friday, June 11, at City Hall.   Jo Ann and Dave talk with Sara Libby of Rose City Copwatch about the upcoming demonstration and the organization's "Fire Frashour" campaign.
