Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney were falsely arrested for car-bombing themselves on May 24, 1990 in Oakland, CA while organizing for Earth First! and Redwood Summer. They sued the FBI for violations of the First Amendment, claiming the FBI knew they were innocent but arrested them to try to silence them. In 2002 Oakland Police officers were ordered to pay a total of $4.4 million to Cherney and to Bari's estate. Judi Bari died of breast cancer in 1997.
