It's kinda nice when we remember we're strong. The extraordinary pro-worker demonstrations that started in Wisconsin two weeks ago -- and have since spread -- give lie to the conventional wisdom that the labor movement is dead. Wisconsin's new governor, Scott Walker, made busting the state public employees' union his first order of business. The union, along with sympathetic Wisconsinites of all stripes, busted him right back -- hard. And they show no sign of backing down.

Women and Homelessness

In Portland, and in the entire United States, we are seeing more faces of homelessness on our city streets – and especially those of women. Join Bread and Roses hosts Nicole Vulcan and Ashley Thirstrup, this Friday, February 25th at 6:00PM as we interview folks from Sisters of the Road café and some local women who are experiencing homelessness on our city streets. They’ll share their stories of how they came to be living on the streets, and what they are doing to survive. We’ll also learn about how Sisters is not only trying to help people affected by homelessness, but instead working to end and uproot the institution of homelessness in our community.

Planned Parenthood & Reproductive Rights Under Attack!

Last Friday, February 18th, the right wing led, U.S. House of Representatives voted to ban the use of federal funds for any services provided by Planned Parenthood of America. They don't just hope to stop women from using their legal right to abortion services but to put birth control out of reach of hundreds of thousands of American women. Tune in to A Deeper look this Thursday morning at 9:30.

The Abe and Joe Talk Radio Show on 03/01/11

Air date:
Tue, 03/01/2011 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
Abe and Joe marvel at the outbreak of democracy in the American Midwest.

And and Joe tackle the movement afoot among American workers, and look back at the history of organized labor in the United States, the (not-coincidental) rise of the middle class -- and at the decades-long campaign by the ruling class to cut them back down to size.
