"Scramble for Africa: Darfur Intervention and the USA."

Hosts Celeste Carey and Cecil Prescod speak with Steven Fake, co author with Kevin Funk of "Scramble for Africa: Darfur Intervention and the USA."

Steven Fake and Kevin Fink have been researching and writing about Sudan since 2006. Their book is a scathing, indictment of the constellation of government leaders, corporate media outlets, and NGOs swirling around Sudan and the myriad ways in which the West has failed Darfur. They look at the NGO culpability, not just at US foreign policy.

Celeste and Cecil will ask Steven Fake about the history of US relations with Sudan, the level of funding of humanitarian efforts in Africa, and some of the contradictions in how aid and humanitarian efforts are distributed.

Republican Woodstock in New Orleans

Categories:
This past week the Southern Republican Leadership Conference (SRLC) was held on New Orleans, scene of one of the great triumphs of Republican leadership, the response to Hurricane Katrina.
(This organization should not be confused with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which is concerned with compassion and equality for all US citizens, regardless of race or creed.)
One of the highlights of this meeting was the speech by former representative and House Speaker, Newt Gingrich. He was greeted with cheers after railing at President Obama’s “secular socialist machine.” It was clear that he was against secular socialism (ASS), and the enthusiastic crowd was full of ASSes as well.
Gingrich is a particular kind of ASS, a smart-ASS.

Why do right-wingers believe all that crap?

Categories:

Why does so much disinformation make the rounds among the right wing/tea party crowd?  There are two matters here.
The first is gullibility.  There is a measurable minority in this country who will believe anything about Obama.  He's a cannibal, he's a Muslim, he's a Kenyan, he will take away our guns, he is a socialist.  I am a socialist, socialists are friends of mine, and, Barack, you are no socialist.  Ninety-five percent of the people who believe he is a socialist could not define one if a gun were held to their head.

Near-Deadly Error: An interview with exonerated death row inmate Juan Melendez-Colon

It is hard to imagine spending over 17 years on death row for a crime you did not commit. Juan Melendez-Colon did just that following his 1984 conviction and sentencing to death in the killing of Auburndale, FL beauty salon owner Delbert Baker.
