Portland City Council voted 3-2 this morning to let police unit commanders have a vote in certain cases before the new police review board.  Does this make the new board "structurally flawed" or does it increase accountability as commissioners supporting the change claim? Voices from the Edge Hosts Dave Mazza and Jo Ann talk about this new development.

Problems with Portland's Independent police review

The body charged with investigating complaints against Portland police has itself come under fire for allegedly failing to fully investigate or resolve citizen complaints.

After Portland’s Independent Police Review Committee released their annual report last week, a number of groups have raised issues with the report.

They say that the Committee is trying to make itself look good, even though citizen dissatisfaction with the process has grown.
Despite the Independent Police Review’s description of their record as improving and responsive, local groups have documented a number of problems with the police review process.

The Abe and Joe Talk Radio Show on 06/22/10

Air date:
Tue, 06/22/2010 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
Is Oregon an anti-immigrant state? A new study suggests it is.

A study commissioned by a consortium of Northwestern public radio stations says that a majority of Northwesterners -- Oregonians, Washingtonians and Idahoans, or whatever they call themselves -- agree with the anti-immigrant law passed recently in Arizona. In Oregon, that support is at 61 percent.

What does it mean? Is anti-immigrant sentiment more widespread than we thought? And what is that sentiment exactly? Fear, born of cultural ignorance? Economic anxiety? Good ol' racism? A toxic brew of all three? With Joe on vacation, Abe leads the discussion.
