Voter ID laws are ensuring that only the "right" people get to vote.
This past summer, the Supreme Court struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act -- and shortly thereafter, new discriminatory "voter ID" laws began to spring up, mostly in the Old South. Now in Texas, a new voter ID law has disenfranchised thousands of women for the crime of having taken a married name. Voter ID, it seems, is the latest in a long line of efforts to ensure that only the "right" people get to vote.

labor protests in Longview, Wash., and dabble in Gen-X cultural milestones.

program date:
Tue, 09/27/2011

Hosted by Abe Proctor and Joe Uris

When the bottom fell out of the financial markets in 2008, lawmakers rushed to bail out the architects of the global crash. But this begs a question -- when will we decide to bail out the collapsed labor market?

Abe and Joe examine the labor unrest in LongviewWash., in the context of labor's decades-long decline. The purchasing power of the working class peaked in the early 1970s; since then, the vast majority of economic growth has gone to the upper reaches of the income scale. In fact, today's minimum wage is worth less in adjusted dollars than it was in 1956. What do you call an economy with this kind of disparity? Let's coin a word: neo-feudalism.

Also, Abe gives a nod to two recent milestones in Gen-X culture.

Has the Republican Party become the God Party? What do we DO about it?

program date:
Tue, 09/20/2011

Hosted by Joe Uris.  Abe Proctor is on Vacation.

Joe has noticed that all of the Republican Hopefulls for the 2012 Presidential Elections have Platforms draped in prayer flags, but not much else.  They all seem to be highly religious, and defer all talk of actual political issues to Religious Values, instead.  Is this how we want to run our country?

Is the Dominionism pushed by Bachman and Perry dangerous to Democracy?

One caller recommended reading Robert Green Ingersoll

The Shock Decade: Abe and Joe look at the 10 years of post-Sept. 11 chaos and exploitation.

program date:
Tue, 09/13/2011

Hosted by Abe Proctor and Joe Uris

The Shock Doctrine: Author Naomi Klein's explanation of capitalism's use of disasters -- and the numb shock that accompanies them -- to carry out radical "free market" revisions. From Afghanistan to Iraq, from Guantanamo to the PATRIOT Act, from Katrina to the financial crisis of 2008, the post-Sept. 11 world has been one big application of the Shock Doctrine. Abe and Joe survey the wreckage.

Joe Returns with a discussion on Who Really Controls America... And, What will we DO about it?

program date:
Tue, 08/30/2011

Joe Uris Returns from his Summer Haitus, and Abe takes a week off.

Today's discussion revolves around Who Really Runs da Joint...  Who?  Capital, that's who, certainly not We The People.  The top One Tenth of One Percent of Americans control that vast majority of wealth in this country, leaving 350 Million of us to scrabble over the scraps.  That's the situation, so wadda WE gonna DO about it?

One caller suggest starting an Urban Family Farm...

Abe surveys the economic, social and political wreckage of the new age of austerity

program date:
Tue, 08/23/2011

Hosted by Abe Proctor.  Joe Uris is still on vacation.

The current austerity fetish was never a good idea, and now we know it's bad politics, too.

The austerity kick in Washington is exactly the wrong thing at the wrong time. At a time of enormous economic duress, the government is tying its own hands, robbing itself of its most effective tool in periods of high unemployment and low demand -- spending. Abandoning Keynsian economics has always carried a high human cost -- and now we know it's bad politics, too.

With Joe on hiatus, Abe surveys the economic, social and political wreckage of the new age of austerity.

A Listener suggested reading about the Economist, Richard Wolff...

Here's an idea, Mr. President: try governing the way you campaigned.

program date:
Tue, 08/16/2011

 Hosted by Abe Proctor

What's a progressive to do these days? A federal court has declared the "individual mandate" provision of the health care bill to be unconstitutional, making it nearly inevitable that the case will find its way to the Supreme Court. Hmm, what sort of provision might have avoided precisely this outcome? A public option, perhaps?

Indeed, what's a progressive to do? The President has disappointed progressives at nearly every turn since he took office. When we needed him to be FDR, he's not even a warmed-over Bill Clinton. But here's the kicker -- most progressives will hold their noses and vote for President Obama in 2012. Why? Because the alternatives are just too absurd.

We discuss The Debt Ceiling Debacle and a recent Advance in Women's Health Legislation

program date:
Tue, 08/09/2011

Hosted by Abe Proctor.  Joe Uris is on Summer Vacation.

Even in these days of shadow, we manage somehow to lurch toward enlightenment. Amid the unfolding debt debacle -- and the first-ever downgrade of U.S. credit -- the Dept. of Health and Human Services announced that all health plans must cover contraception, with no copay. It's a tremendous victory for everyone who likes to have sex.

Predictably, the usual hysteria ensued. With Joe on summer hiatus, Abe looks at the fallout from the debt "deal" and the surprise decision in favor of good sense.

Abe dicusses the latest in the debt ceiling debacle... Farewell, American democracy. We hardly knew ye...

program date:
Tue, 08/02/2011

Hosted by Abe Procctor.  Joe Uris is on vacation for the summer.

The triumph of the ruling class is at hand. With a vote in Washington looming, the America in which we have all grown up is primed for sacrifice on the altar of tax cuts and deficit reduction. Congressional Republicans threatened to blow up the global economy unless they got exactly what they wanted -- and the president gave it to them. Our political system is wholly, finally, broken.

In one of the great ironies of the modern age, the core principals of the Democratic Party -- even Social Security and Medicare -- are on the verge of being dealt away by a Democratic president. Many progressives allowed themselves to believe that Barack Obama would be the second coming of FDR. Turns out he's not even a warmed-over Bill Clinton.
