Air date:
Tue, 03/05/2013 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
Just when you thought is was over, the War on Women returns.

There's one thing we can all set our clocks by -- somewhere, there's a conservative who's really bent that there are women out there having unauthorized sex. State legislators in Michigan, Virginia, Alabama, and Indiana have all recently introduced legislation restricting reproductive rights.

Is this really about protecting the fetus, or is it about controlling women, their bodies, and their sexuality? Or both? Abe and Joe examine this question and take listener phone calls.

The "sequester." How very dumb.

The "sequester" may not be the dumbest thing in the history of human civiization, but it makes the Top 10. Abe and Joe examine the phony "crisis" foisted upon us by our cowardly representatives in Washington.

Air date:
Tue, 02/19/2013 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
Abe and Joe discuss the Keystone XL pipeline project

Tens of thousands of protesters converged on the National Mall in Washington, DC on Sunday to demand action on climate change. Among their principal targets: the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, which would carry oil from the Alberta Tar Sands in Canada to U.S. ports on the Gulf of Mexico.

The project is an environmental disaster waiting to happen. Aquifers, delicate ecosystems, and entire communities would be devastated in the event of a major leak. Small wonder, then, that a Senate majority recently voted in favor of the project, and that the President is at best ambivalent.

Abe and Joe look at the latest battleground between profit and preservation.

The Abe and Joe Talk Radio Show on 02/12/13

Air date:
Tue, 02/12/2013 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
Abe and Joe discuss the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, and the ramifications for US Christianity.

So the Pope resigned on Monday -- the first time that's happened in about 600 years -- leaving the world's 1.2 million Catholics without a leader. We can only hope that his successor will support contraception and refuse to protect pedophiles. But we can, with some accuracy, predict that the new Pope will be male.

In the wake of the Holy Father's abdication, Abe and Joe examine the state of modern Christianity, and ask listeners whether patriarchal religion is a help or a hindrance in the 21st Century.

State Sen. Floyd Prozanski (D-Lane/Douglas Counties) and Rep. John Huffman (R-The Dalles) join Abe and Joe to talk about the future of drones in Oregon.

What can progressives expect -- or hope for -- from Obama's 2nd term?

President Obama was inaugurated for the second time yesterday, cementing what will certainly be remembered as one of the more unlikely personal stories in American history. For progressives, though, the Obama presidency has been a mixed bag at best.

What can we expect from his second term? Without the pressure of re-election bearing upon him, will we see a bolder Obama? Will we see meaningful action on climate change? On gun violence? Will we at long last see the next New Deal we've been hoping for? Join Abe and Joe as they look forward at the next four years.

Let's look back on a good couple of weeks for women.

program date:
Tue, 02/07/2012

Hosted by Abe Proctor.

It's been a good couple of weeks for women. First, there was the ruling that nonprofitsmust cover contraception in their employees' health plans, even if doing so runs counter to church doctrine. Then there was the stunning betrayal -- and equally stunning reversal -- by the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Both were victories for the notion of women as full human beings, and, crucially, both were won in the court of public opinion.

Also, it's fund-raising time. Open yer wallets in the name of our fair sisters, y'all.

The slipshod cleanup effort at the Hanford nuclear site in Washington state.

program date:
Tue, 01/31/2012

Right here in the Columbia Basin, we have our very own atomic wasteland. The Hanford nuclear site in Washington state is a festering Cold War sore, and the multibillion-dollar cleanup effort is underfunded and poorly run. Abe and Joe discuss a blockbuster article on the dubious attempt to remedy the sins of our fathers.

Interestingly, we have a Nuclear Power Plant Builder down in Corvallis.  Thier Marketing Literature says it's totally safe, but it doesn't address the issue of Nuclear Waste, or what to do with Spent Fuel.

There will be an Anti-Hanford Protest in Ridgeland, WA on April 15, 2012.

Tue, 01/24/2012

Plus -- an update on the time-honored practice of racist "dog whistles" in conservative circles.

Abe and Joe marvel at "Beyond Vietnam," one of MLK's greatest speeches.

program date:
Tue, 01/17/2012

Great oratory speaks to universal and self-evident human truths, and thus remains timeless. Nearly 45 years on, Abe and Joe revisit "Beyond Vietnam," one of Dr. Martin Luther King's most powerful and prescient speeches. In it, he expresses the concept that the movements against poverty, racism and militarism are all facets of humanity's inexorable struggle toward justice and enlightenment.

Do we really have a choice? Abe sizes up the 2012 presidential election.

program date:
Tue, 01/10/2012

 Hosted by Abe Proctor

It's the mating call of the Naderites: there's no difference between the Democrats and Republicans. They're both corporate parties; the only difference lies in how far right-of-center they lie.

But there is a difference. It's not as stark as most progressives might like, but it's there, and it makes itself felt over time. That's why, as frustrated and as impatient as we might be, we've got to pay attention. With Joe away, Abe looks at the quadrennial liberal presidential dilemma.
