Voter ID

Voter ID laws are ensuring that only the "right" people get to vote.
This past summer, the Supreme Court struck down a key provision of the Voting Rights Act -- and shortly thereafter, new discriminatory "voter ID" laws began to spring up, mostly in the Old South. Now in Texas, a new voter ID law has disenfranchised thousands of women for the crime of having taken a married name. Voter ID, it seems, is the latest in a long line of efforts to ensure that only the "right" people get to vote.

Coal Trains are Commin' to the Great NorthWest

program date:
Tue, 04/24/2012

 Hosted by Joe Uris

There are plans afoot to build Coal Export Terminals on the Oregon Coast, and transport Huge Quantities of Coal for Export across our state by rail.  This is a Bad Idea, for myriad reasons.  Coal Trains leave a trail of Coal Dust in their wake that has adverse health effects on anyone living near the tracks.  Burning Coal is bad for the Environment, and the Open Pit Mines this coal will come from will scar the Earth forever.

Our guests today are Bethany Cotton, with GreenPeace, and Dan Serres from the Columbia River Keeper.  We'll talk about the Pro's and Con's of the Mining, Transporting, and Burning of Coal.

(Hint:  There are no Pro's...)

Your government wants to see you naked. Abe and Joe discuss last week's Supreme Court ruling.

program date:
Wed, 04/11/2012

Hosted by Abe Proctor and Joe Uris

Justice may be blind, but your government wants to see you naked. Last week's Supreme Court ruling in Florence v. Bd. of Chosen Freeholders lets law enforcement impose a strip search for virtually any offense. It's another nail in the coffin for the 4th Amendment, and part of the nascent security state which, rather than being pared back in the post-Bush era, is only becoming more firmly entrenched. Abe and Joe take a closer look.

Yes, there really is a vast conservative conspiracy. Abe and Joe look at ALEC.

program date:
Tue, 04/03/2012

Hosted by Abe Proctor and Joe Uris

In the early 1970s, a group of conservative lawmakers and businesspeople realized that synchronicity between the governments of different states was the path to ideological supremacy. The American Legislative Exchange Council -- ALEC -- was born. The group "assists" state legislators -- many of whom constitute ALEC's membership -- to draft legislation that downsizes government, removes corporate regulations, and makes it harder to hold wealthy miscreants to account.

And ever since the 2010 election swept conservatives into power in statehouses across the nation, ALEC has set about its business with a vengeance.

Is Big Brother watching? Oh, yes he is. Abe and Joe look at the NSA's massive new spy center.

program date:
Tue, 03/27/2012

Hosted by Abe Proctor and Joe Uris

There's a lot of information flying around these days, more so than ever before, in fact. Keeping tabs on all of it would seem to be an impossible task. Not to worry, though -- Big Brother is up to the job. Abe and Joe take a look at the National Security Agency's massive new spy center, and discuss life in the modern American surveillance state.

The latest dispatches from the War on Women.

program date:
Tue, 03/20/2012

Relax, vagina-having Americans, it's for your own good. Since taking power in statehouses across the country, not to mention the U.S. House, the GOP has wasted no time in addressing the most serious problem confronting the United States -- uppity women. Whether it's by way of legislation, executive decisions, or gasbag radio hosts, the Republican Party is hell-bent on putting women back in their place. Abe and Joe look at the latest salvos in the conservative War on Women.

Private gains, public losses. Abe and Joe look at Portland's biogas boondoggle.

program date:
Tue, 03/13/2012

 Hosted by Joe Uris

We appologize for the technical difficulties with our Air Signal this morning.  If you missed today's show, you can listen to it here.

Why not take our food waste and turn it into a source of energy? That's the idea behind biogas, and the impetus for a proposed new biogas plant in the Cully neighborhood. There's just one hitch to the plan: the company that wants to build the plant, Columbia Biogas, is asking the city of Portland to back its loan -- a scheme that could cost the city as much as $900,000 per year for 20 years. Abe and Joe take a look at this latest attempt to privatize gains and socialize losses.

What if there were a Congressional hearing on women's health isssues, and women weren't invited?

program date:
Tue, 03/06/2012

Hosted by Abe Proctor and Joe Uris

What if there were a Congressional hearing on women's health issues, and women weren't invited? You'd be in 21st-century America. Abe and Joe return to the ongoing brouhaha over contraception, in which old-timey right-wing misogyny is laid increasingly bare.

A Listener adds:

Rush, Roger Ailes & Fox new

Rush Limbaugh isn't just a talk radio comedian, he's a dangerous and influential Republican operative, promoted by Roger Ailes who was a campaign advisor/manager for various Republican presidential candidates before taking the helm of Fox:

I always enjoy your show, but don't call in, because I want to hear what others are saying (but I do think that you allow the reasonable Republican Michael too much of your limited time to divert and compromise the dialog).
