Gerry Pollet joins Abe and Joe to discuss the latest chapter in the Hanford cleanup saga.

For decades, the Hanford Nuclear Reservation on the Columbia River has been a festering stew of radioactive waste. A long-term effort is under way to clean it up -- but if the federal government has its way, Hanford will be the new home of some 30,000 truckloads of fresh atomic goo.

Gerry Pollet of Heart of America Northwest joins Abe and Joe to discuss the latest round in the ongoing Hanford drama.

Tue, 04/10/2012 - 8:00am - 9:00am

Your government wants to see you naked. Abe and Joe discuss last week's Supreme Court ruling.

Justice may be blind, but your government wants to see you naked. Last week's Supreme Court ruling in Florence v. Bd. of Chosen Freeholders lets law enforcement impose a strip search for virtually any offense. It's another nail in the coffin for the 4th Amendment, and part of the nascent security state which, rather than being pared back in the post-Bush era, is only becoming more firmly entrenched. Abe and Joe take a closer look.

The Abe and Joe Talk Radio Show on 04/03/12

Air date:
Tue, 04/03/2012 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
Yes, there really is a vast conservative conspiracy. Abe and Joe look at ALEC.

In the early 1970s, a group of conservative lawmakers and businesspeople realized that synchronicity between the governments of different states was the path to ideological supremacy. The American Legislative Exchange Council -- ALEC -- was born. The group "assists" state legislators -- many of whom constitute ALEC's membership -- to draft legislation that downsizes government, removes corporate regulations, and makes it harder to hold wealthy miscreants to account.

Short Description:
Is Big Brother watching? Oh, yes he is. Abe and Joe look at the NSA's massive new spy center.

There's a lot of information flying around these days, more so than ever before, in fact. Keeping tabs on all of it would seem to be an impossible task. Not to worry, though -- Big Brother is up to the job. Abe and Joe take a look at the National Security Agency's massive new spy center, and discuss life in the modern American surveillance state.

The latest dispatches from the War on Women.

Relax, vagina-having Americans, it's for your own good. Since taking power in statehouses across the country, not to mention the U.S. House, the GOP has wasted no time in addressing the most serious problem confronting the United States -- uppity women.

The Abe and Joe Talk Radio Show on 03/13/12

Air date:
Tue, 03/13/2012 - 8:00am - 9:00am
Short Description:
Private gains, public losses. Abe and Joe look at Portland's biogas boondoggle.

Why not take our food waste and turn it into a source of energy? That's the idea behind biogas, and the impetus for a proposed new biogas plant in the Cully neighborhood. There's just one hitch to the plan: the company that wants to build the plant, Columbia Biogas, is asking the city of Portland to back its loan -- a scheme that could cost the city as much as $900,000 per year for 20 years. Abe and Joe take a look at this latest attempt to privatize gains and socialize losses.

The Abe and Joe Talk Radio Show on 03/06/12

What if there were a Congressional hearing on women's health issues, and women weren't invited? You'd be in 21st-century America. Abe and Joe return to the ongoing brouhaha over contraception, in which old-timey right-wing misogyny is laid increasingly bare.

Joe talks about Coal Trains through Oregon

program date:
Tue, 08/21/2012

Hosted by Joe Uris.  Abe Proctor is on Vacation.

Today's topic is the Coal Industry, and their plans to chop down Mountains in Appalacia and ship them through the Columbia Gorge, to China for incineration.  This is a Bad Idea for many reasons.  The trains leak significant amounts of Coal Dust, which degrades our health and environment.  Burning Coal in China increases the Air Pollution right here, in the United States, for we live on a Globe, a closed system.  Chopping down Mountains and throwing the rubble and waste into Streams is very destructive.

The United States has degraded itself from a First World Nation of Innovation and Manufacturing, to a Third World Source of Raw Materials for the Rest of the Developing Nations.

Have you ever seen what a Coal Train looks and sounds like when rolling by?  At 2:00 into this video, you can get an idea of how much coal dust blows out of these things...

Abe examines Rep. Paul Ryan, the would-be VP. We're through the looking glass now, everyone.

program date:

Hoated by Abe Proctor.  Joe Uris is on Vacation

Rep. Paul Ryan -- arch-conservative, culture warrior, and Randite -- has joined the GOP ticket as Mitt Romney's aspiring VP. Most people know Ryan as the author of the budget package -- passed by the House -- which, among other things, voucherizes Medicare, takes a hatchet to the social safety net, and explodes the deficit by giving more money to the rich. President Obama and the Democrats will doubtless twist themselves in knots trying to offer a "reasonable" compromise, and the scope of our discourse will continue its inevitable rightward slide.

Congratulations, America, the 2012 election will now be a deficit-cutting contest, and any hope we have of a second New Deal recedes further into the distance.

Hey sports fans! The Olympics, and other sports, are good things!

program date:
Tue, 08/07/2012

Hosted by Abe Proctor.  Joe Uris is on Vacation.

As longtime listeners know, Abe sometimes waxes poetic about soccer. And when he does, he gets a generous helping of grief from listeners. But in the midst of theOlympic Games -- and after one of the greatest soccer matches of all time -- Abe weighs in on why sports are necessary and even good.

After all, if you can't be an athlete, be an athletic supporter.

A court ruled against the birth control mandate in the health care law. Why? "Religious freedom."

program date:
Tue, 07/31/2012

Last week, a federal court ruled against the contraceptive mandate in the Affordable Care Act -- the first court to do so. The reason? The mandate, said the court, violates an employer's religious liberty. For a nation that famously erected a wall between church and state, we spend an inordinate amount of time dealing with the consequences of religious belief in public life. The Constitution says that there shall be noreligious test for public office, but try running for President as an atheist and see how long you last.

With Joe away, Abe looks at the long religious tug-of-war in our secular nation.

Another day, another gun massacre in America.

program date:
Tue, 07/24/2012

Hosted by Abe Proctor.  Joe Uris is on Vacation.

Twelve people are dead in suburban Colorado, shot while at the movies. What has followed has been an almost rote recitation of the now-standard script for such affairs: Shock, horror, fear, anger, sadness, expressions of sympathy and solidarity with victims and their families, public calls for us to come together as a nation and not bring "politics" into this upwelling of communal grief.Speculation as to how many lives might have been saved if everyone in the theater had been packing.

How many more gun massacres before we do something about it? Probably many, because the 2ndAmendment is as close to an absolute as you can find in the U.S. Constitution -- and nobody running for president seems interested in talking about it. With Joe away, Abe looks at the latest bloody harvest of guns in America.

It's the empire, stupid. Abe looks at the U.S. military's global array of new bases.

program date:
Tue, 07/17/2012

Hosted by Abe Proctor.  Joe Uris is on Vacation.

The Global War on Terror (TM) pretty much buried the hope that, after the end of the Cold War, the U.S. might begin to beat its swords into plowshares. Two wars and occupations later, we are struggling with the moral and economic legacy of Bush-era excesses.

Lost in the post-9/11 haze, however, is a radical reshaping of the U.S.' global military presence. Sprawling Cold War-era bases are making way for a wide scattering of small, Spartan "lily pads" from which America can project its armed might. With Joe away, Abe looks at the new face of American empire.

A Listener recommends the book, War is a Racket, by USMC General Smedley T. Butler
