Dmae Roberts features Miracle Theatre's Boomcracklefly, a world premiere play by Charisse Castro Smith and directed by Olga Sanchez. Also this week  we have our fourth Writers Read segment with Ruby Murray from Puget Island, WA. And finally, we'll hear about Oregon Nikkei Legacy Centerand Portland Taiko benefits to help Japan's disaster survivors.

First up Dmae talks with Olga Sanchez, artistic director/director and actor Emily Gleason from Miracle Theatre.

Boomcracklefly features a female impersonator in New York who falls in love with a a revolutionary  scientist  while  two acrobat sisters in Key West encounter  the ghost of Ernest Hemingway.

Meanwhile an architect in Havanna builds wings to fly away from his pregnant wife. These three worlds collide in this original play blending science fiction with magical realism.

This is a world premiere play by a young playwright who is graduating from the Yale School of Drama. Hear Emily Gleason perform an excerpt from the poetic script.

The show runs March 25-April 16 at Miracle Theatre at 525 SE Stark Street in Portland.

In our fourth Writers Read segment, we'll hear from Ruby Murray, a writer and photographer who lives in the Columbia River estuary. She is an enrolled Osage Indian, whose work focuses on people finding home within multiple cultures. She’s come to know the River and its history through her 1^st generation Norwegian-American husband. A poem and photo-essay reflecting life on the Lower River was published in American Ghost, edited by Lillien Waller for Stockport Flats, 2011.

And in the final portion of the show,we hear from Mari Watanabe, executive director of Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center about their how they've changed their focus on the Sakura (Cherry Blossom) Festival at the Japanese American Historical Plaza (Couch & Naito Parkway) event on April 3rd at 3pm to help  raise funds for disaster relief in Japan.  We'll also learn about Portland Taiko's benefit March 22nd at 7pm at Portland State University's Lincoln Hall.

Producer Macon Reed worked with Dmae Roberts on a feature about Filmmaker Brian Lindstrom, the debut story in the "Pushing Boundaries" series.

Filmmaker Brian Lindstrom who makes films about people he says we put an ex through: ex-cons, people with long histories of drug addiction, mental illness, and homelessness. He uses his films to start conversations because he believes that when we witness another’s story, we can become invested in their lives. Lindstrom is currently working on Alien Boy, a documentary about Jim Chasse, whose death in the custody of Portland law enforcement officers in 2006 caused an outcry about civil rights and interactions between police and the mentally ill. Producer Macon Reed speaks with Lindstrom about Alien Boy. Reed worked as a production intern for a new, year-long Stage and Studio series called Pushing Boundaries that profiles artists and organizations pushing physical, emotional, and artistic boundaries in their work. This is the debut piece of the series.

Pushing Boundaries is funded by the Regional Arts and Culture Council.

Macon Reed is a graduate of the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies, where she studied radio documentary production. She recently came back to Oregon after traveling throughout the country with her students as a documentary instructor at the Brown Ledge Gap Year Program.

Dmae brings us Jordan Harrison's "Kid Simple: A Radio Play In The Flesh" directed by Tom Moorman, Sarah McGregor and JR Wickman at Coho Productions which runs through March 26th. We also hear the third installment of the Writers Read series which focuses on Northwest writers. This Writers Read features Poet A. Molotkov from Portland. This show aired February 22nd at 11am on KBOO 90.7FM and online at StageandStudio.org!

"Kid Simple" is described as a quirky surreal fantasy involving a high school inventor of a machine that picks up hidden sounds.

This makes the second play penned by Jordan Harrison to be running in Portland at the same time. "Futura" at Portland Center Stage opened early in February and ends March 27th.  Harrison is currently in production at the prestigious Human Festival in Louisville.

In this interview, Actors McGregor and Wickham describe their character's motivations and desires.

Tom Moorman talks about the benefits of collaboration on a technically rich show that mixes and speculative fiction/magical realism. We hear about his designers including James Crino's costume design, live sound foley and intricate sound design by Scotty Iseri.

We also learn about the challenges of self-production and about the cooperation between theatre companies in Portland.

A. Molotkov is a writer, composer, etc., and a co-founder of the Inflectionist poetry movement (Inflectionism.com).  He is the author of several novels, short story and poetry collections and the winner of the 2010 New Millennium Writings and the 2008 E. M. Koeppel Awards for fiction, nominated for a Pushcart.  Molotkov’s fiction and poetry has appeared in over 20 publications, both in print and online.  In 2010, he spearheaded a poetry and music performance “Love Outlives Us”.  He often reads at a variety of Portland venues.
