fEARnoMUSIC presents the Portland premiere of The Juliet Letters in collaboration with four talented Portland singers: Leah Yorkston, Holcombe Waller, Stephen Marc Beaudoin, and Angela Niederloh. The Juliet Letters is a song cycle Elvis Costello developed with the Brodsky String Quartet, a British quartet that has worked with Bjork, Paul McCartney and other pop musicians in addition to performing standard classical quartets. The cycle is based on imaginary correspondence between a Veronese academic and people who wrote letters to Shakespeare's most famous heroine, Juliet Capulet. In “The Juliet Letters,” Costello and the members of the quartet crafted a series of dramatic songs and ballads, in which characters of varying ages and degrees of sanity tell stories of love, death, and betrayal, based on the letters. Shakespeare’s dramatic heroine serves as a metaphor for the disillusionment that they all experience in some way or another.
The performance takes place Tuesday, April 12, 8pm, at the Aladdin Theater, 3017 SE Milwaukee Avenue, Portland. You can purchase tickets fromTicketmaster or the Aladdin Theater.

Actor Peter Macon at OSF and Filmmaker Brian Lindstrom
In this edition of Stage & Studio Host/Producer Dmae Roberts talks with Actor Peter Macon, at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. And producer Macon Reed presents a feature about Filmmaker Brian Lindstrom, the debut story in the "Pushing Boundaries" series.
Peter Macon has been acting with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival since 2008. He's portrayedOthello and his favorite role Macbeth. This season he's in The African Company Presents Richard III, but currently he's portraying Tom Robinson in To Kill a Mockingbird--the show has already been sold out for months. Macon and Roberts discuss the racial issues that the play raises. Of Tom's relationship with Mayella, the white woman Tom is accused of raping, Macon says, "by virtue of them being friends, they're breaking the law of the South in a such a profound way. But it needed to be broken." Macon also shares a bit of his family history. His great-grandfather married a white woman in Alabama and both were chased out of town on horseback. Macon describes how that history impacted his portrayal of Tom Robinson.
In the second part of the show: Filmmaker Brian Lindstrom who makes films about people he says we put an ex through: ex-cons, people with long histories of drug addiction, mental illness, and homelessness. He uses his films to start conversations because he believes that when we witness another’s story, we can become invested in their lives. Lindstrom is currently working on Alien Boy, a documentary about Jim Chasse, whose death in the custody of Portland law enforcement officers in 2006 caused an outcry about civil rights and interactions between police and the mentally ill.
Producer Macon Reed speaks withLindstrom about Alien Boy in the debut of a new, year-long Stage and Studio series called “Pushing Boundaries,” that profiles artists and organizations pushing physical, emotional, and artistic boundaries in their work.
This series is funded by the Regional Arts and Culture Council.
Macon Reed is a graduate of the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies, where she studied radio documentary production. She recently came back to Oregon after traveling throughout the country with her students as a documentary instructor at the Brown Ledge Gap Year Program.

Thara Memory and S. Renee Mitchell
Dmae talks with Portland Jazz great Thara Memory and Librettist S. Renee Mitchell about Sherman: A Jazz Opera opening at Ethos-IFCC during Black History Month. Sherman highlights Portland's jazz history during the 1940s-50s, a high point of jazz when a growth of African American families moved into the North Williams Ave.
We learn about some of the hidden history of Portland's jazz scene and the African American musicians who made the music. According to Thara Memory, much of that history is being lost daily as older musicians pass away and their history is ignored. "Sherman: A Jazz Opera" is perhaps the only actual jazz opera in America and it works to remember the legacy of Portland's greatest music makers.
Thara Memory has been working for a couple decades on the music for this show that centers on Sherman Thomas a gifted saxophonist who mesmerized audiences in smoky jazz clubs at a time when the African Americans during WWII came to Portland to build war ships and also brought their East Coast music dubbing North Williams Avenue, the "Black Broadway."
S. Renee Mitchell is an award-winning former newspaper journalist nominated for the Pulitzer twie. She brings her taleents as performer, singer, poet and playwright to create the libretto for this true African American opera.
Performing Thara Memory's score in Sherman: A Jazz Opera are some of Portland's best musicans including Janice Scroggins, Reggie Houston and La Rhonda Steele. '
The show runs February 18-27 at Ethos @ IFCC located at 5340 N. Interstate Ave. in Portland. Donations are sought for a larger production due in 2012. Contact Ms. Mitchell for further details.
